The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has a fantastic opportunity for a Project Coordinator to join us in making a difference on a fixed-term contract basis, initially for three years.

The RSC’s purpose is to help the chemical sciences community make the world a better place. We believe that people thrive in institutions and organisations where they feel they belong, and diversity of thought, perspective and experience are required for individuals and organisations to be successful. Through our long-term commitment to inclusion and diversity we have developed multiple interventions, demonstrating a thought-leadership position to drive change in the culture of chemistry. Our Inclusion and Diversity strategy will push us harder and further than ever before. We aim to increase the diversity of people choosing the chemical sciences and fulfilling their potential for a truly inclusive community.

Our Race and Ethnicity Unit represents our commitment in action to tackling racism and ethnic inequalities uncovered in the chemical sciences. The Unit will be established with an initial investment of £1.5M over the first three years to serve as a basis to evaluate outcomes and impact, and future needs in the community and for our future work.

As our Race and Ethnicity Project Coordinator you will support the day-to-day activities of the Race and Ethnicity Unit which includes working with the team and supporting our network of volunteers, ensuring the delivery of new initiatives and activities, including the new grants and other initiatives with industry and funders of research. In addition, you will be responsible for the Inclusion and Diversity Fund special calls on Race and Ethnicity, undertaking casework for routine enquiries, arranging/processing payments to beneficiaries and volunteers and supporting the volunteer network and any other community initiatives and events planned and organised by the Race and Ethnicity Unit. You will also support the administrative work of the Race and Ethnicity Unit and will produce the monthly reports on expenses and allocated budgets to the different initiatives.

We are looking for:

  • Educated to at least A Level standard or equivalent.
  • Articulate communicator both orally and in writing, with experience in a customer-focussed environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including organising meetings and events, and experience of administrative tasks including filing, databases, word-processing, minute-taking, spreadsheet software and financial administration.
  • Empathetic approach to volunteering and diversity, with a willingness to undertake knowledge gathering tasks to support enquiries.
  • Awareness of data protection and confidentiality issues.
  • Able to interact, influence and network competently with colleagues, partners, members and peers at other professional bodies and to make informed assessments and analysis and communicate these.
  • Experience of organising meetings and events.

The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge or London office, however we are currently embracing hybrid working, and therefore you will have the opportunity to work from a location other than this, as agreed with your line manager. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend the offices as needed for their role. This role will involve occasional travel within the UK and some weekend or evening work.
