Programme Coordinator, Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

Working as part of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Education and Schools Engagement team, you will be responsible for financial planning and budgeting, ensuring inclusive and balanced coverage across UK and Ireland, quality assurance and skills development, and reporting against targets.

You can be home-based or based at our Science Park Cambridge office, but you will need to spend two to four days per month at our Cambridge office and travel regularly throughout the UK and Ireland (up to four days per week during term-time), with occasional weekend and non-core hour work required.

The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest non-government supporter of chemistry education in the UK. We reach millions every year through media, education, and public outreach. Our activities encompass formal and informal education from primary science in schools, through to preparing for next career moves.

Spectroscopy in a Suitcase is a high-profile schools’ engagement programme that provides teachers and their students with hands-on access to portable spectrometers during guided sessions delivered by university staff and students, with the goals of: 

• Enriching teachers’ confidence in teaching analytical techniques.
• Improving students’ understanding of modern analytical techniques, problem-solving skills, interpretational and practical skills in 16-19 curricula.
• Providing an opportunity for staff and students at schools and universities to have productive conversations, engaging pupils with HE chemistry studies and research, whilst also developing the skills of SIAS providers in science communication and teaching. 

We are looking for:  

Essential:

• Degree level qualification in science (ideally chemistry), science communication or equivalent experience.
• A good working knowledge of secondary and tertiary education systems in the UK and Ireland, including the relevant curricula, education qualifications and career paths available.
• A knowledge of the principles of spectroscopy and analytical science.
• Proven ability and experience of delivering teaching or training sessions.
• Good project and time management skills, to plan and prioritise work and meet deadlines.
• Proven ability to successfully manage internal and external relationships, including contract negotiations, and to develop networks and new opportunities with tact and diplomacy.
• Proven ability to present complex technical data to different audiences.
• Excellent IT skills and a willingness to learn how to use new software tools and systems.
• Experience of designing, testing and realising new activities in support of education.
• Proven finance and budget management skills and experience.
• Keen interest in science and scientists and able to understand RSC and SIAS needs. 

Desirable:

• Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
• Experience working directly with schools and science teachers, and understanding their needs.
• Knowledge of research, best practice and programmes to support widening participation, fair access, and aspirations in STEM careers.
• Knowledge of evaluation methods and impact assessment in the sector.
• Understanding of child and data protection policies and legislation.
