Are you an ambitious, experienced publishing professional who is passionate about the global importance of scientific communication?

The Royal Society of Chemistry has a full-time, permanent Managing Editor position available within our Journals team, based in Cambridge. This is an opportunity to further your career in STM publishing with the world’s leading chemistry community, advancing excellence in the chemical sciences.

What you will be doing:

This is a key strategic role leading the editorial development of RSC Advances, the world’s largest chemistry journal and our newest gold open access journal. You will also be managing the day-to-day editorial activities of our contract journals, New Journal of Chemistry, a unique partnership between the CNRS and Royal Society of Chemistry, and Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, owned by two leading European societies.

Working with the Executive Editor, you will lead the strategic development of these high-impact products in line with the wider Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing strategy, in terms of quality, market share, reputation and customer service. You will build positive and collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders (Editorial board members, authors, internal relationships) and will be responsible for recruitment and performance management of external Associate Editors. You will represent these products at national and international conferences to ensure the best authorship and geographic diversity. You will also develop marketing plans to maximise the market profiles of these products.

What we are looking for:

Essential:

  • Experience in STM journal publishing, including commissioning; an excellent understanding of the peer review process, editorial policy and marketing.
  • A good honours degree in science (chemical sciences preferred).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills are required, together with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences.

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the open access landscape
  • Previous experience with Editorial Boards.
  • Contacts within the relevant communities.

At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we will support your development and reward your contribution with a great pro rata benefits package.

If this sounds of interest, please apply before the closing date. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 16/08/17 or Thursday 17/08/17 in Cambridge.
