Job Details
The School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology (“Georgia Tech”) invites applications for the position of Chair of the School and Professor, with an anticipated starting date of August 1, 2024. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Chemistry or a closely related discipline. The expected rank at appointment is at the level of full professor, however applicants at all tenure-eligible ranks will be considered. Candidates should have an outstanding record as a researcher, educator and mentor, and an accomplished record of effective leadership. In addition, they should possess a strong commitment to faculty/staff development; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and public engagement.
Georgia Tech is a top-rated public university located on an attractive campus in the heart of Atlanta, a large, vibrant, verdant city having great economic and cultural strengths. The Institute is a member of the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the Association of American Universities. Georgia Tech prides itself on its technology resources, collaborations and high-quality student body. Georgia Tech is an equal education/employment opportunity institution dedicated to building a diverse community. We, thus, strongly encourage applications from underrepresented minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Georgia Tech has policies to promote a healthy work-life balance and is aware that attracting faculty may require meeting the needs of two careers.
Georgia Tech’s School of Chemistry and Biochemistry has 32 research groups, approximately 170 graduate students, and almost 400 undergraduate majors, learning, teaching, and conducting research in a highly enriching environment, with the support of about 20 staff. Other than Caltech’s, Georgia Tech’s School of Chemistry and Biochemistry is the smallest department ranked in the top 20 nationally. The School is embedded among many biomedical, chemical, materials, and mechanical engineers who conduct ¾and benefit from¾ chemistry and biochemistry research that has led to a tightknit community along with easy access to extraordinary collaborators, facilities, and programs. This close intertwinement with engineering, thus, provides a unique platform to deliver transformative science and chemistry education, and to build internationally leading and highly interdisciplinary research clusters that can lead and not react to science trends.
Applications should include a letter of interest outlining the candidate’s qualifications for the position with particular focus on past leadership experiences and a vision for leadership of an academic department including the nurturing of the inclusiveness of the entire Chemistry and Biochemistry community so that students, staff and faculty are empowered, their development fostered and their well-being is cared for, along with a curriculum vita that includes the applicant’s record of teaching, publications, grants, advising, and administrative and leadership experience. Provide in addition a document, that in two pages or less, outlines how your professional and academic experiences have prepared you to support and apply Georgia Tech's values, which are described in our strategic plan. This document should be submitted as a PDF file as an "Additional Document" document. Reference letters are not required at this time. These will be requested only for the finalists who are invited to on-campus interviews.
Applications must be submitted via the University System of Georgia Careers portal: please visit careers.gatech.edu/careers, select Internal Applicants or External Applicants as appropriate, then View All Jobs, and type 261812 or Professor and Chair – School of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the search field.
Inquiries about the position should be addressed to Professor Natalie Stingelin, search committee chair, at natalie.stingelin@mse.gatech.edu.
The review of applications will begin on October 1, 2023. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
