At the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) we embrace flexibility and offer hybrid working, which means our teams come together when they need to collaborate.
Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge office, you will be able to work from home within the UK, with the expectation that you will attend the office as needed for your role.
The role
We are looking for a Front-end Developer, who will contribute to the design, build and continual improvement of RSC software applications.
As a Front-end Developer, you will be responsible for front-end software development and you will be collaborating with the other development teams and QA. You will undertake software development tasks as a key developer on the team; peer review and pair program to ensure quality and good design.
You will elicit requirements, along with effective interpretation and implementation of user stories, and specify the technology components of green field and brown field systems and projects. You will provide expert technical guidance, ensuring best practice for development processes, specifically DevOps and continuous delivery pipelines.
In this role it is expected that you will attend the office on an ad-hoc basis. If you need flexible working arrangements, please outline this in your application.
What we are looking for:
Essential:
- Proficient in HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Familiarity with modern front-end web development frameworks and technologies, such as React, Angular or Vue.js
- Familiarity with version control systems e.g. Git for collaborating and managing code changes
- Experience with responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
- Able to produce working UI code from provided wireframes or graphical layouts (e.g. Figma files)
- Some understanding of performance optimisation
- Knowledge of Accessibility guidelines and SEO principles
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desirable:
- Awareness of enterprise application architecture, considering security, data protection, performance and high availability.
- Basic knowledge of backend technologies
- Familiarity with frontend design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Sketch of Figma
- Experience with Agile practices such as Scrum or Kanban
- Experience with CSS pre-processors such as SASS or LESS
