Job Details

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has an outstanding opportunity for a Programme Manager, Education Communities to join us on a maternity cover basis.

About the Royal Society of Chemistry:

A not-for-profit organisation with a heritage that spans over 180 years, the RSC has an ambitious vision for the future. We invest in educating future generations of scientists. We raise and maintain standards. We partner with industry and academia, promoting collaboration and innovation. We advise governments on policy, and we promote the talent, information and ideas that lead to great advances in science.

We provide advice, resources, and practical support to learners and educators in schools, colleges, and universities around the world. In the UK, we are the largest non-governmental funder of chemistry education, and we influence government policy to ensure that opportunities to develop skills meet the unique needs of chemistry. Our strategic mission for our education work is to empower communities to offer an excellent chemistry education to all, driving diversity and improving skills in the chemical sciences.

The role:

As our Programme Manager for Education Communities, you will manage the development of our proposition to support trainee and early career teachers in the UK and Ireland. Working closely with the leads of other programmes, you will develop internal capabilities and service propositions, ensuring that our offering is engaging and connects teachers to support their requirements.

You will take on management of a team of typically 2-3 direct reports and key accountabilities for our early career teacher programme. This will involve programme and proposition planning, working with colleagues across a range of education programmes and RSC initiatives, and collaborative projects with other organisations. You will manage the team responsible for designing and delivering services for trainee and early career teachers, including the ITT Scholarship Scheme for chemistry trainees in England, with responsibility for a £100k + budget.

What we are looking for:

  • Good working knowledge of STEM education and challenges facing teachers and learners in UK and Ireland, supported by a degree level qualification in science, or a teaching qualification or equivalent experience.
  • An understanding of the teacher training and early career pathways in the UK and Ireland, with experience of training or supporting the development of early career or trainee teachers.
  • Experience of developing and successfully implementing services for educators, including customer research, proposition development and evaluation.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to plan and prioritise work, to meet deadlines, and to support allocation of work within a team of employees and suppliers.
  • Experience of managing people and coordinating workload, either through projects or line management.
  • Experience of building and maintaining networks, with the ability to influence and negotiate within and without an organisation.
  • Experience of monitoring budgets and contributing to budget planning.

As an organisation we are embracing hybrid working, and homeworking/remote working in the UK could be considered for this role. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will travel and attend our offices as needed for their role. This role will require some travel for meetings, events and conferences and occasional weekend and non-core working hours.
