AWE is currently recruiting for a Senior Safety Assessor, within the Explosive Materials and Initiation Science Group within MAS.

Salary: £42,520 - £67,200 (dependant on suitability and level of experience)

This role is to provide extensive technical knowledge and expertise in the field of materials and chemical science. The role will also require being able to lead the delivery of assigned programmes, projects and processes, to the required scope, timescales, quality and cost.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Deliver critical explosives safety assessments to scope and time as required by the business.


  • Support the development of the Explosives Safety Assessment (ESA) technical strategy.


  • Support technical development of the junior ESA team members through development plans, technical guidance and mentoring.


  • Provide technical judgement to support Company programme/project decisions.


  • Technical review of programme/project deliverables to ensure that the required quality standards are met.


  • Plan technical projects, programmes and trials.


  • Identify and rectify problems in analyses and processes, and/or know when to seek assistance where needed in rectifying them.


  • Act as a representative in all relevant internal and external interactions, including the US National Laboratories.


  • Support the development of junior team members by mentoring and critiquing.


  • Maintain and develop underpinning experimental capabilities.


  • Maintain and develop extensive knowledge in a particular scientific or product field and share best practice.


  • Undertake work in compliance with Company processes, standards, and procedures.


  • Support continuous improvement activities within the local area.


  • Maintain high levels of housekeeping within the work environment.


  • May be required to carry out safety related roles including but not limited to Work Supervisory Officer; COSHH Assessor; Risk Assessor; Manual Handling Assessor; Radiation Protection Supervisor.


  • The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs.




We would be interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate knowledge or experience in some of the following:


  • Degree in scientific or STEM subject or equivalent work experience


  • Confident with building and maintaining effective internal and external relationships


  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written)


  • Effective multi-task working, identify and manage priorities and work to challenging timescales


  • Some technical understanding of the subject matter profession of the team although can be gained in the role




Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role
