AWE has exciting opportunities for a Senior Materials Strategist to join our Materials and Analytical Science group, bringing their experience to AWE and to successfully play a key role delivering for our customers.

Location: Reading

Package: £42,520 - £65,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

As a Senior Materials Strategist you will provide support to the through-life management of our Strategic Materials portfolio. Through the role you will gain a broader understanding of the portfolio and what is required to support it. This can include, but will not be limited to, being accountable for understanding and modelling the lifecycle of AWE's Strategic Materials and recommending solutions and investments to resolve identified problems whilst ensuring security of supply into the future.

Throughout the role you will be able to build a wide network of contacts throughout AWE, Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO), and wider industry which will provide you with a broader understanding of the materials portfolio.



Key responsibilities would include:


  • Providing technical leadership as a materials strategist for aspects of the materials portfolio


  • Providing technical leadership and planning across containers and packaging


  • Supporting the Head of Strategic Materials through the provision of technical advice to the wider business and DNO


  • Planning technical projects, programmes, and trials


  • Strategic planning for future AWE/UK investments in materials or packaging projects


  • Integration of both national and international solutions to materials and packaging solutions


  • Supporting the joint AWE/DNO materials team



We would be interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate knowledge or experience in some of the following:


  • Degree in a STEM subject or equivalent work experience


  • Knowledge and experience of Strategic Materials


  • Ability to provide technical leadership and direction to local teams


  • A willingness to apply your expertise to a variety of technical challenges


  • Ability to apply excellent stakeholder engagement skills to all levels of the business


  • A drive to innovate and improve delivery and quality


  • Competence in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Candidates must be willing to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role
