Job Details

The Royal Society of Chemistry seeks a manager with relevant experience to join forces with us in delivering our Mission, following the launch of Change Makers.

The Royal Society of Chemistry is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to advance chemical sciences. We are a provider of knowledge, a professional body and a voice for chemical sciences, with a heritage spanning 180 years. We reinvest the surplus from our publishing business back into the global scientific community, supporting our purpose to help the chemical science community make the world a better place.

Through Change Makers, we are building a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem committed to creating positive change in the world through deep tech chemistry. Powered by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Change Makers supports deep tech ventures, tackles systemic issues in the deep tech space and champions technologies that can change the world.

We focus on carefully selected ventures whose technologies have the potential to make a positive impact on critical global issues.

We bring together key actors and focus on the whole system to drive profound change. Whether there are challenges in scaling technology, lack of access to laboratory facilities, or support is needed to encourage truly inclusive chemistry entrepreneurship: we take a holistic and long-term view.

Our Manager – Entrepreneurship and Ecosystem Challenges will oversee the delivery, further development and evaluation of our existing portfolio of programmes focused on entrepreneurship and early stage ventures currently managed by a number of Programme Managers. As well as overseeing the existing portfolio, the role holder will be expected to initiate new programmes and initiatives aimed at early stage ventures.

Working closely with the Senior Manager, Enterprise Impact Programmes, the successful candidate will help inform the development of the long-term strategy for Change Makers.

The role holder is expected to provide strategic advice and guidance in shaping our research into systemic challenges in the deep tech chemistry ecosystem.

What we are looking for:

  • Educated to degree level or higher, or equivalent experience in chemistry or a science related field.
  • Deep understanding of entrepreneurial and early stage venture space and the innovation ecosystem, preferably achieved by working in science or engineering based startups or by working with startup leaders and founders.
  • Demonstrable experience of initiating, delivering and evaluating large scale programmes preferably in the third sector, Research Councils, Charity Foundations.
  • Proven management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with and influence at a senior level.

As an organisation we are embracing hybrid working, and homeworking/remote working in the UK could be considered for this role. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend the office as needed for their role. This role will require regular travel to our Cambridge or London offices and some UK travel.
