Job Details

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) is seeking teaching-track faculty of Chemistry at the assistant teaching professor level. The preferred starting date in Qatar is August 2023.

The responsibilities are primarily related to teaching, with an expectation of engagement in curriculum development and service-related activities, and in research, principally with undergraduate students in biological sciences. These are in the form of lecture and lab courses. There is also the possibility of developing courses that might be of special interest to non-science students and upper-level courses for biology students, depending upon the candidate’s area of expertise. We are interested in finding a candidate who is collegial and collaborative and would feel comfortable sharing roles and responsibilities with the other chemistry faculty. Strong collaboration with, and support from, faculty teaching these courses on the main campus in Pittsburgh is expected.

The ideal candidate needs to have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry by the time of appointment, and demonstrates excellence in undergraduate teaching, including the implementation of effective teaching methodologies, and practices that further CMU’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.

While this is an entry level position, Carnegie Mellon University offers teaching appointments with multi-year contracts and promotion opportunities. The position offers a competitive salary, travel and housing allowances and other benefit packages, which may include attractive research and professional development support. A reasonable teaching load allows time for quality teaching, research and close involvement with students, faculty and the local business and educational community.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar is a branch campus that operates in concert with several other American and European branch campuses under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation’s Education City. The branch campus closely follows the admissions requirements and English language curriculum of the home campus, which awards all degrees. The several thousand students in Education City students are a broad mix of nationalities, but primarily come from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. CMUQ’s faculty is a mix of professionals hired specifically to the campus and seconded faculty from the main campus. CMUQ’s primary focus is undergraduate education in Business Administration, Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Information Systems.

Carnegie Mellon University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. Carnegie Mellon welcomes faculty applicants who will contribute to this diversity through their research, teaching, and service, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute in different ways.

Applications should include:

  • a cover letter (statement of interest),
  • a curriculum vitae,
  • a teaching statement (outlining the candidate’s teaching philosophy and experience, including the use of any innovative approaches for teaching students in general and/or organic chemistry, and any relevant elective courses),
  • a research statement (clearly indicating the candidate’s approach for involving undergraduate students in research),
  • a diversity statement (outlining how the candidate has contributed to, or plans to contribute to, diversity, inclusion, and equity),
  • any additional supporting documentation that may include representative professional or scholarly work,
  • the email addresses of three individuals who have been asked by the candidate to upload confidential letters of reference and will be automatically contacted by our online application system.

Official graduate academic transcripts will be required by the time of appointment.

Review of applications will begin Spring 2023. Priority will be given to applications received by February 15th, 2023.
