About the Royal Society of Chemistry:

A not-for-profit organisation with a heritage that spans over 180 years, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has an ambitious international vision for the future. We invest in educating future generations of scientists. We raise and maintain standards. We partner with industry and academia, promoting collaboration and innovation. We advise governments on policy, and we promote the talent, information and ideas that lead to great advances in science.

The RSC provides advice, resources, and practical support to learners and educators in schools, colleges, and universities around the world. In the UK, we are the largest non-governmental funder of chemistry education, and we influence government policy to ensure that opportunities to develop skills meet the unique needs of chemistry. Our strategic mission for our education work is to empower communities to offer an excellent chemistry education to all, driving diversity and improving skills in the chemical sciences.

The role:

The official title of this role is Programme Manager, Education Voice and Influence. In this role you will work with teams across the RSC, overseeing our programme to influence education policy. This includes dissemination to policymakers and other stakeholders, community engagement, the development of policy positions, and conducting research. The range of activity covers all stages of education from primary to undergraduate, including vocational and technical routes, in the UK and Ireland. You will lead a small team and will engage with other staff, contractors, partner organisations and external advisors, managing a budget of approximately £50k.

What we are looking for:

  • A degree in chemistry or a related subject; or demonstrable understanding of chemistry that will support oversight of chemistry curriculum development to degree level.
  • Knowledge and experience of education systems, policy and practise in the UK (an awareness of international education systems and policy is desirable).
  • Experience in policy communications, able to effectively influence and pitch a message to an audience (verbally and in writing) and communicate complex ideas on various levels.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, developing networks and creating opportunities with tact and diplomacy.

As an organisation we are embracing hybrid working, and homeworking/remote working within the UK could be considered for this role. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend our Cambridge and London offices as needed for their role. This role will require travel throughout the UK and Ireland, calling with colleagues, meeting stakeholders and influencers, and attending events and may require occasional weekend and non-core working hours.
