Job Details

Who we are

Chemify is a spin-out of the University of Glasgow, founded by Prof. Lee Cronin backed by world-class investors.  The aim of Chemify is to build the infrastructure for digital chemistry and to digitize chemistry. We will do this by producing cheminformatic and robotic solutions that run chemical code for chemical & drug discovery, chemical synthesis, and materials discovery and manufacture. We are increasing our coverage of chemical space aiming at complexity and diversity whilst increasing reliability and safety and decreasing time for the synthesis of complex molecules.

The role

You will be joining our rapidly expanding team based in the new Advanced Research Centre on the University of Glasgow campus in the West End of Glasgow. The position provides the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team spanning engineering, robotics, chemical synthesis, drug discovery and software development.

A key component of the work will be the digitization of chemistry. Your main tasks as a Synthetic Chemist will be chemical synthesis and reaction optimization using our system, to encode the chemical processes, and to ensure reliability of chemical protocols. You will be collaborating closely with members from the other teams at Chemify – engineering, software, and cheminformatics.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out manual and automated synthetic procedures on milligram and gram scale to support Chemify’s product development needs and compound sales.
  • Working with senior chemists on development of processes and reaction conditions.
  • Working with the engineering team and software team to develop modules of the automation platform and execute test plans for hardware revisions and software updates.
  • Taking the initiative in developing new and more efficient processes for synthesis and automation.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of experiments according to the agreed standards.

Desired skills & attributes

  • Work experience in an organic synthesis chemistry laboratory.
  • Experience with preparative chromatographic purification.
  • Affinity to and/or interest in programming (for example in Python) or algorithms.

Requirements

  • First class MSc degree.
  • Theoretical and practical organic synthesis knowledge and skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to abstract and formalise problems.
  • Enthusiasm to learn new approaches and concepts and to work with an experimental automation platform.
  • Oral and written communication & presentation skills (English fluency).
