Job Details

We are looking for a senior science correspondent or science correspondent to source news stories and features for Chemistry World, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s flagship magazine. Chemistry World is a valuable benefit for members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, as well as being a subscription magazine for non-members and for a large international audience. It provides a variety of content in print and digital channels, including news, features, opinions, podcasts and webinars.

Your responsibilities will include:

As an experienced science correspondent, you will support the news team of Chemistry World, principally through the continuous publishing of up-to-the-moment news and features on the latest trends, developments and discoveries in the chemical sciences to its website. You will report on all areas of interest to the chemical science community, from the latest research and business news, to analysis of current affairs through the lens of the chemical sciences, as well as writing and recording in other formats and media. You will also deputise for the news editor in their absence, commissioning and editing news and performing other related duties.

What we are looking for:

The ideal candidate will hold a degree level qualification in a scientific field (chemical science preferred), with relevant experience of pitching, developing, writing, editing and proofing stories on a range of scientific topics in a journalistic style (preferably for a science magazine or similar) with excellent attention to detail. You will have good knowledge of the latest themes and developments in the chemical sciences and the wider chemistry community. As you will represent the Royal Society of Chemistry’s highest profile product at a variety of scientific conferences and events, you will demonstrate excellent communication skills as well as in-depth knowledge of the magazine’s overall objectives and strategy. You will be a self-starter who is motivated to find and investigate ideas for stories and develop contacts and sources.

The Royal Society of Chemistry offers excellent benefits and a great work environment. As an organisation we are embracing hybrid working, and homeworking/remote working within the UK could be considered for this role. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend our Cambridge and London offices as needed for their role. Travel is a routine part of this role as you will regularly report on domestic and international conferences and events.

If you are interested in joining an organisation full of committed, professional and friendly people working to support and inspire a global chemistry community, please apply before the end of our closing date.
