Job Details

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has a great opportunity for an experienced Caseworker to join us on a temporary basis for eighteen months.

The Chemists’ Community Fund, the working name of the RSC Benevolent Fund, provides financial support for the relief and prevention of poverty, as well as advice and sign-posting to support members and their families through challenging life events; a network of volunteers provides additional local support for members in need. This service is delivered through a team of specialist Caseworkers and referrals to specialist providers. Beyond relieving poverty, the Fund has scope to utilise its funds for alternative charitable needs. The Fund has seen demand for its services to RSC members increase during the COVID-19 pandemic and alongside this has developed the range of services we offer to support the wider chemistry community.

The official job title for this role is Chemists' Community Fund Caseworker and the main purpose of this role is to support the day-to-day activities of the RSC Chemists’ Community Fund with guidance and support for members, and support for the network of volunteers. You will help develop the service in line with the new strategy for the Fund, and gain a specialist understanding of the wider advice and guidance environment and relevant issues.

You will also provide support for the Chemists’ Community Fund Grants Committee and work closely with other teams within Member Communities and also with the RSC Careers service on areas such as employment and job seeking, where appropriate.

We are looking for:

  • Experience of managing casework and be able to handle phone calls, emails and issues of a sensitive nature, demonstrating tact, diplomacy, empathy and the ability to relate to people who may be experiencing difficult personal circumstances.
  • Articulate communicator with experience in a customer-focused environment.
  • Ability to discern between information essential to case development and information of only peripheral importance.
  • Ability to exert effective influence and form productive relationships with internal colleagues, external contacts and supervise volunteers.
  • Must be able to work independently when required, but also as part of a team. Be up-to-date on data protection and confidentiality practices.
  • Forward thinking, with an empathetic approach to casework and services, able to undertake administration duties and project management when required.

The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge office, however we are currently embracing hybrid working, and therefore you will have the opportunity to work from a UK location other than this, as agreed with your line manager. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend the offices (e.g. on average 1-2 days per week including Thursdays for a weekly meeting) and will travel within the UK as needed for this role.
