The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has a great opportunity for a Chemists' Community Fund Support Manager to join us on a full-time (35-hour week) permanent basis.
The Chemists’ Community Fund, the working name of the Benevolent Fund of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), offers financial, practical, and emotional support to individual members and their dependents. It is a linked charity to the RSC and has beneficiaries at all career stages around the world.
The Fund’s primary purpose is the prevention and relief of poverty, and we deliver advice and guidance, provide grants, and refer to specialist services, in order that those in need get the most appropriate support for their situation. Recently, the Fund has gone through significant development, to raise awareness, widen its charitable activities and be more relevant and accessible to current and potential beneficiaries, introducing new and innovative grant initiatives.
The main purpose of this role is to provide line management for a team of up to four specialist caseworkers and to initiate, manage and deliver projects in order to widen our charitable activities and to work with the Fund Manager to:
- Further widen the activities and impact of the RSC Chemists’ Community Fund.
- Collaborate with colleagues and external partners.
- Ensure we continue to be relevant to the modern challenges faced by an international community whilst widening our charitable impact.
You will also be involved in developing the roles of our member volunteers and will provide support for the Chemists’ Community Fund Committee.
We are looking for:
- Proven line management experience, ideally managing caseworkers (and volunteers is highly desirable), in a similar role in a charity or other grant-awarding body.
- Demonstrable experience of managing varied projects from inception to delivery and evaluation stages.
- Specialist knowledge in charity sector and/or welfare support and able to build and use networks to develop collaborations and share specialist knowledge.
- Tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations and able to relate to people at all levels.
- Experience of governance and decision-making in a charitable organisation, or equivalent.
- A degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent training, experience, and qualifications.

The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge office, however we are currently embracing hybrid working, and therefore you will have the opportunity to work from a location other than this, as agreed with your line manager. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend the offices (e.g. on average 1-2 days per week including Thursdays for a weekly meeting) and will travel within the UK as needed for this role.
