Job Details

Springer Nature, the publisher of Nature, is looking to recruit a Chief Editor for Nature Chemical Engineering, a new journal that will launch in 2024.

Nature Chemical Engineering will publish significant fundamental and applied research that has direct relevance to the broad community of chemical engineers in academia and industry. The journal will cover all aspects of chemical and environmental engineering, from fundamental scientific advances in reaction design, catalysis and materials science through to the study and development of chemical processes of relevance to industry (such as transportation, separation, reaction engineering, purification and recycling) as well as the necessary systems and infrastructure required for them (including reactor design, process modelling and chemical safety). Research related to the broader impact of chemical/process engineering and efforts to find sustainable solutions and implementation of a circular economy will also be welcomed at the journal.

To help realize this vision, we require an ambitious and dynamic Chief Editor, to develop, launch and establish Nature Chemical Engineering as the leading publication in its field.

Applicants must have a PhD — and preferably postdoctoral or industrial experience — and a strong track record in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline. Previous editorial and/or managerial experience is an additional advantage.

The successful applicant will lead the Nature Chemical Engineering editorial team and work closely with them on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, commissioning and editing of Reviews, Comment and News & Views, as well as writing for the journal, including Editorials.

A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences; willingness to travel is, therefore, essential.

Working within a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes NatureNature Chemistry, Nature Catalysis and Nature Energy, this demanding and stimulating role calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science. The successful candidate will be dynamic and outgoing, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and the ability to absorb new areas of research are prerequisites.
