AWE have a fantastic opportunity for a scientist to become part of the leadership within our Conventional Materials Science department.



You will lead materials experts in the delivery of a wide range of component technology programmes and related inorganic and organic materials development and assessment activities.



This is a great opportunity to utilising your leadership skills and experience to ensure the safe delivery of a high quality experimental programme together with the maintaining development of the team to grow the technical capabilities within them.

Location: Reading / Basingstoke area

Package: £41,950 - £60,000 (subject to skills and experience)

The Science Manager will be responsible for:


  • Leading, coaching and developing a team at a local level to deliver team and personal objectives safely and securely to meet operational plans


  • Assessing staff performance, measured against agreed personal objectives and accountabilities, and taking corrective action to improve performance where necessary via appropriate management interventions


  • Providing knowledge and expertise in the field of technical specialism


  • The technical quality of the work undertaken by the team through appropriate internal (i.e. with Subject Matter Experts) and external reviews


  • Ensuring that the work undertaken by the team is consistent with AWE strategy, policies, processes, procedures, and quality standards while minimising risk to delivery of the Integrated Technical Programme


  • Knowledge capture in order to maintain, share, preserve and protect IP


  • Undertaking other duties as reasonably required from time to time by line and task management


  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player




Qualifications, Skills & Experience


  • Degree in scientific or STEM subject or equivalent work experience


  • Technical knowledge of the subject matter profession of the team


  • Competence in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)


  • Knowledge and skills in a technical area such as Analytical techniques


  • Strategic and tactical planning skills


  • Ideally experience of successfully managing a high performing and motivated team


  • Proven track record of driving delivery, performance and continuous improvement


  • Demonstrates a working appreciation of financial and business requirements




All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
