Our Analytical Research and Development Department, at Pfizer R&D in Sandwich, UK plays a critical role in transforming patients’ lives around the world by providing the analytical chemistry support for the development and manufacture of medicines for studies at all phases of clinical development.  As part of Worldwide R&D and Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecules, we are responsible for the analytical science that supports the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and drug product processes.

We are seeking a senior scientist or principal scientist as an analytical project leader to join our Analytical Research and Development (ARD) team in Sandwich, UK.

Job Focus

The successful candidate will have a strong analytical chemistry background and will support Pfizer’s development portfolio through matrix leadership of analytical chemistry project teams.  They will use their experience and broad knowledge of separation and detection techniques, method validation, impurity control strategies and ICH guidelines to ensure project teams develop effective and robust analytical methodologies and clinical phase appropriate specifications.  They will work in cross-functional project teams and support partner lines from chemical and formulation development, and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a project team of analysts to provide quality analytical data to support our partner lines process and formulation development, and optimisation. Develop and validate analytical methods, identify and isolate impurities, and develop analytical control strategies for novel, innovative, breakthrough medicines in clinical development, including treatments for Covid-19, rare infectious disease, cancer and other life-threatening conditions. Provide exemplary analytical support to projects, with the expectation that the analytical technology will be suitable for transfer to clinical and commercial manufacturing environments. May represent the analytical line on cross-functional project teams, initiatives and working groups. May be a lead author of analytical sections of CMC regulatory documentation, e.g. IND/IMPD, CTDs. Provide technical coaching/mentoring to colleagues within their project teams and across ARD and Pharmaceutical Sciences.  Provide presentations, training and advice to others to share learnings and promote increased scientific, technical and strategic understanding around the area of analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical development.   Be a positive advocate for new technology, process improvements and for the application of computational tools and digital design approaches. Apply analytical techniques to problem solving including liquid, gas and supercritical fluid chromatography, infra-red spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and NMR.   Maintain written records of all experimental work in accordance with departmental philosophies and review other colleagues experimental work to same standard.
