AWE have an exciting opportunity for an experienced people manager to lead a team within our Radiological Instruments & Calibration (RI&C) group.

The team offers technical advice and support to a wide range of the major projects, current and planned, at AWE to ensure they are compliant with legislation and best practice as well as a full range of non RA calibration services covering measurement areas such as electrical, thermal and mechanical.

Location: Reading / Basingstoke area

Package: £41,950 - £65,000 (subject to skills and experience)

In addition to the above, the RI&C Group also provides radiological instruments, systems and advice to ensure work carried out by AWE, and others, involving radiation, is legally compliant. This involves the calibration of several hundred instruments and systems annually as well as the repair and return to service of such equipment as required.



The Science Manager will be responsible for:



  • Leading, coaching and developing a team at a local level to deliver team and personal objectives safely and securely to meet operational plans


  • Assessing staff performance, measured against agreed personal objectives and accountabilities, and taking corrective action to improve performance where necessary via appropriate management interventions


  • Provide knowledge and expertise in the field of technical specialism


  • The technical quality of the work undertaken by the team through appropriate internal (i.e. with Subject Matter Experts) and external reviews


  • Ensuring that the work undertaken by the team is consistent with AWE strategy, policies, processes, procedures, and quality standards while minimising risk to delivery of the Integrated Technical Programme


  • Knowledge capture in order to maintain, share, preserve and protect IP


  • Undertaking other duties as reasonably required from time to time by line and task management


  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player




Qualifications, Skills & Experience



  • Degree in scientific or STEM subject or equivalent work experience


  • Technical knowledge of the subject matter profession of the team


  • Competence in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)


  • Knowledge and skills in a technical area such as Analytical techniques


  • Strategic and tactical planning skills


  • Ideally experience of successfully managing a high performing and motivated team


  • Proven track record of driving delivery, performance and continuous improvement


  • Demonstrates a working appreciation of financial and business requirements




All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
