As a Public Engagement Specialist for the RSC, you will lead and deliver flagship public engagement projects and programming activity, develop partnerships, perform monitoring and evaluation, and create public engagement opportunities for our community.  

The core purpose of the role is:  

  1. Harnessing the enthusiasm and passion within the chemistry community and our networks to connect public audiences with the positive role of chemists and chemistry in society and the wider world.
  2. Using member insights (and linking to the Membership strategy) to identify and develop meaningful and rewarding opportunities for members to support RSC campaigns amplifying the reach and impact of our activity.
  3. Amplifying reach and impact through development of relationships with grant holders, partnerships with community specialists and opportunities for members.

We are looking for: 

  • A science degree or equivalent is essential.
  • Knowledge of the public engagement and outreach landscape is essential, and a top-level understanding of how science can have a positive impact on social, political, and economic issues.
  • Experience working in a complex environment to understand the needs and motivations of the scientific community to be involved in public engagement.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in customer relations and/or volunteer support is essential and knowledge of current trends in volunteerism is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), influencing and presentation skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people at all levels.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, proven ability to manage competing demands while still meeting deadlines. 

The role will require travel in the UK and occasionally internationally, with some out of hours events. The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge office, however we are currently piloting hybrid working, and you may be able to work from a location other than this, as agreed with your line manager.
