The Royal Society of Chemistry has an exceptional opportunity for a Programme Manager, Education Policy to join us on a permanent full-time (35-hour week) basis.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is a not-for-profit organisation with a thriving international community of over 50,000 members, an internationally renowned publisher of high-quality chemical science knowledge and the professional body for chemists in the UK. Around the world, we invest in educating future generations of scientists. We raise and maintain standards. We partner with industry and academia, promoting collaboration and innovation. We advise governments on policy, and we promote the talent, information and ideas that lead to great advances in science.

The RSC provides advice, resources, and practical support to learners and educators in schools, colleges, and universities around the world. In the UK, we are the largest non-governmental funder of chemistry education and we influence government policy to ensure that opportunities to develop skills meet the unique needs of chemistry.

As a Programme Manager for Education Policy for the RSC, you will work with teams across the organisation and will oversee our programme to influence education policy. This includes dissemination to policymakers and other stakeholders, community engagement, the development of policy positions, and conducting research. The range of activity covers all stages of education from primary to undergraduate, including vocational and technical routes, in the UK and Republic of Ireland. You will a small team, and will engage with other staff, contractors, partner organisations and external advisors, managing a budget of approximately £50k.

We are looking for:

  • A degree in chemistry or a related subject; or demonstrable understanding of chemistry that will support oversight of chemistry curriculum development to degree level.
  • Knowledge and experience of education systems, policy and practise in the UK (an awareness of international education systems and policy is desirable).
  • Experience in policy communications, able to effectively influence and pitch a message to an audience (verbally and in writing) and communicate complex ideas on various levels.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, developing networks and creating opportunities with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proven ability to work effectively, managing and delivering complex programmes of activities, demonstrating planning, budget management, prioritisation, critical judgement and composure under pressure.

The Royal Society of Chemistry supports development and offers great benefits. The contractual base for this role is our Cambridge or London office (spending around 4–6 days a month at the other office), however we are about to enter a period of piloting hybrid working, and you may be able to work from a location other than this, as agreed with your line manager. Applicants should be aware that there is an expectation that employees will attend the offices as needed for their role, and that permanent working arrangements away from the office may not be agreed in the future. The role will involve travel throughout the UK and Ireland, calling with colleagues, meeting stakeholders and influencers, and attending events and may require occasional weekend and non-core working hours.

If interested, please apply before the end of our closing date.
