Senior Fire Safety Research Scientist/Engineer

£38,259 - £44,790

Buxton, East Midlands

Reference number: 89312

At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. One of HSE's key purposes is to ensure major hazards are properly managed in industries such as offshore oil and gas, construction and chemicals manufacture. Following the Grenfell tragedy, there’s also a renewed focus on fire safety and we work closely with the newly formed Building Safety Regulator, which is implementing a more stringent regulatory regime for higher-risk buildings. Much of our practical research takes place at the Science Division in Buxton, where we have access to an unrivalled range of large-scale testing and evaluation facilities.

The role

Joining the Fire Safety Team in our Major Hazards Group, you’ll carry out a range of practical fire safety and protection studies in collaboration with many other technical experts. You’ll contribute to innovative research work and offer consultancy advice to support HSE and a range of commercial and government customers.  You can also expect to be part of teams investigating workplace incidents and concerns, and to provide scientific and engineering support to HSE inspectors.  Your work will contribute directly to the improvement and maintenance of safety standards.

Your background

An experienced researcher, with a Masters or PhD relating to fire science, you’ll have in-depth practical experience of fire testing or other experimental research applicable to large-scale fire studies.  You’ll be used to designing, planning and delivering safe, high-quality projects to time and cost targets.  Familiarity with selecting and using relevant instrumentation, as well as data capture and data analysis, is essential. You must be capable of working independently and both collaborating within and leading teams. Strong communication skills are key, including the ability to write clear and concise reports.

Rewards

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.

Our work affects people’s lives across the UK, and it’s important that our teams reflect the diversity of the society we work to protect. So we look for people to bring different skills, perspectives and experience from all walks of life, and particularly welcome BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants, currently underrepresented in this discipline within HSE.

Company

At the Health and Safety Executive, we believe everyone has the right to come home safe and well from their job.  That’s why our mission is to prevent work-related death, injury and ill health.

We are proud of the support we provide to businesses – through free guidance and advice. By giving employers the confidence to manage risks correctly, we boost productivity, support the economy and contribute to a fairer society.

HSE helps workers understand how they can stay safe and well.

With roots stretching back to 1833 the modern HSE is an independent regulator with over forty years’ experience helping Great Britain work well. Using world leading science we have helped protect millions of people from devastating injury and suffering.

HSE leads the way, but doesn’t act alone. Everyone has a part to play - employers, unions, trade associations, professional bodies, academics and others.

Working in partnership is one of our strengths. It’s at the heart of how we protect workers and the public.

We concentrate on the most serious risks. We target industries with the greatest hazards, and sectors with the worst risk management record.

We are firm and fair when using our legal powers. Inspection helps us check that serious risks are managed sensibly. When things go wrong, investigation helps us get to the truth and learn lessons.

We hold employers to account for their failures and get answers for victims and make workplaces safer.

The world of work is always changing. We use science to understand these changes. And that understanding helps us all prepare for the workplaces of tomorrow...so Great Britain continues to be one of the safest and best places to work and do business.

We are the Health and Safety Executive.
