Job Title: Associate or Senior Editor (x2), Nature Synthesis

Location: London, Berlin or New York

Closing date: December 8th 2020

Nature Synthesis – launching in January 2022 – is looking to recruit an Associate or Senior Editor with research expertise in chemical and/or material synthesis. This position is an exciting opportunity to join the launching editorial team of Nature Synthesis and to aid in the shaping and identity of this new journal. The journal will publish exceptional research articles on synthetic chemistry and material synthesis with the end-goal of creating a compound, material or device that will benefit science, humankind or our society. It will provide a high-visibility publishing venue for authors working in both the chemical sciences and material sciences, and aims to bridge these scientific disciplines by the reporting of research advances of shared interest in terms of fundamental knowledge and application.

Like other Nature Research titles, Nature Synthesis will also publish News & Views, Comment, Perspective and Review articles, creating a forum that will help accelerate the cross-disciplinary application of new synthetic techniques as well as scalable and more efficient approaches such as automation.

We are recruiting for an Associate or Senior Editor with expertise in synthetic aspects of any of the following fields; organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, catalysis or materials fabrication/processing. Applicants should have a PhD and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong track record in research relevant to synthetic chemistry or the synthesis of materials. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered for a Senior Editor position.

The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of the journal. They will handle original research papers submitted from all over the world, and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review. They will also be involved in the commissioning and editing of Review, Comment and News & Views articles, as well as writing editorial content for the journal.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science and technology are prerequisites. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the research community through laboratory visits and international conferences. Therefore, a willingness to travel (when appropriate and required) and meet scientists worldwide is essential.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis, and will be located in our London, Berlin or New York offices.

To apply: Interested candidates should submit a recent CV and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the position and salary expectation.  Please also include a Research Highlight (of approx. 250 words) on a recently published research paper reporting a chemical or material synthesis that has caught your attention.

Closing Date: December 8th 2020
