We are currently recruiting for an Analytical Scientist to work within the Isotope and Particle Analysis team within Materials & Analytical Science department at AWE.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world class capability that supports several programmes for Nuclear Threat Reduction including Nuclear Forensics and Safeguards whilst also contributing to AWEs core mission.

We provide a capability that utilises light microscopy, electron microscopy and isotopic analysis by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) or Secondary Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). The collection of techniques ensures we have a mixed discipline team providing technical expertise that is essential to meet unique and specific customer requirements.



This a multi-disciplinary role where you can be expected to use your experience in either Electron Microscopy or Mass Spectrometry to perform analysis of radioactive samples, participate in proficiency tests, conduct research and development as required. Outputs can include analytical reports, technical reports, presentations and working collaboratively with other teams.



Ideally, we are looking for the successful candidate to have a degree level science qualification, in chemistry, environmental sciences or physics ideally with experience in forensic applications and have knowledge, skills and or experience of some of the following:
  • Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy (SEM or TEM) or Mass spectrometry (SIMS or TIMS)
  • Experience working in clean room environment
  • An ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner to both a technical and non-technical audience
  • Strong organisational skills; capable of multi-tasking, identifying and managing priorities to meet defined time scales
  • Working within a team towards common goals
  • Willingness to represent AWE externally and able to travel abroad if required




Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
