Job Details

Would you like to work on a magazine for teachers, delivering effective, useful content for today’s education environment?

The Royal Society of Chemistry has an opportunity for an Assistant Editor, Education Magazines and Journals to join us on a temporary (up to 15-months) full-time (35-hour week) basis. You will be based at our Cambridge Science Park office (free onsite parking and close to the guided busway and Cambridge North train station), with some travel for meetings, events and conferences required.

As Assistant Editor, you will demonstrate a good understanding of publishing systems, workflows and procedures, as you will contribute to the production of Education in Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s flagship magazine for teachers. This includes commissioning, writing and editing content, and coordinating with freelance contributors and editors. Working with our Deputy Editor, you will plan and deliver a pipeline of high-quality content, reflecting the needs and expectations of our key audiences, online and in print. With your understanding of publishing systems, workflows and procedures, you will commission, write and oversee editing of content for Education in Chemistry.

The Royal Society of Chemistry is the UK’s professional body for chemical scientists and the world’s leading chemistry community. We are a prestigious not-for-profit publishing and knowledge business, educating future generations of scientists, for the benefit of science and humanity. In the UK, we are the largest non-governmental funder of chemistry education. The goal of our Education Publishing team is to provide relevant and useful advice, resources, and practical support to educators and their students in schools, colleges and universities.

We are looking for:

Required:

  • Proven experience of writing and / or editing content for the web.
  • Proven ability to engage and grow an online audience.
  • Demonstrable time management skills and experience of meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, adaptable and able to work with relatively little supervision.
  • Understanding of digital publishing systems and processes.
  • A degree-level qualification.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a teaching environment, or a strong understanding of the education landscape in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we offer a great work environment and excellent benefits.

If interested in this opportunity, please apply before the end of our closing date.
