We are seeking a chemistry intern to support our R&D and engineering team in the development of our novel chemical process which uses ionic liquids to separate components in wood biomass. The technology was originally developed at Imperial College London and is now being commercialised by Chrysalix Technologies, a London-based SME with a focus on biorefining. This internship is funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Using the proprietary ionic liquid process under various process conditions, isolate cellulose from cellulose-containing input materials and characterise it
  • Develop a bleaching procedure to produce bleached cellulose fibres and nanocellulose
  • Liaise with commercial partners and potential customers to identify suitable applications of the materials while understanding the impact the process conditions and characteristics of the input material have on the product quality
  • Support the engineering team with data on corrosion of metals in the ionic liquid and physicochemical properties of various process streams

The successful candidate will have a first degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related discipline and work experience in a research environment. You will ideally have knowledge of (lignocellulosic) biomass and/or biorefining.

You will have a high level of self-motivation and the ability to effectively plan and organise work. You are flexible and cooperative. You will be able to produce clear written reports. You will be willing to learn a broad range of new techniques, follow laboratory protocols and keep accurate and complete records of all your findings. You will have good communication skills which allow you to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders of different backgrounds.

You will benefit from working in a high-paced start-up environment joining a team formed of world-leading researchers in sustainable solvent technologies and ambitious entrepreneurs. You will get first-hand experience of research and development work in biorefining, joining the fight for a more sustainable future.

This fulltime post is available from 1 August 2019 and is for 6 months in the first instance. The post is based in South Kensington, London.
