Salary: £30,198 per annum plus benefits

Contract: Permanent

Closing date: 9am on Monday 1 April 2019

The Natural History Museum is one of the world’s leading museums, internationally recognised for its dual role as a centre of excellence in scientific research and as a leader in the presentation of natural history through exhibitions, public programmes, publications and the web.

As a part of the museum’s Core Research Laboratories Department, our Imaging & Analysis Centre is a central resource for the museum’s science group, contributing to the science strategy as well as public engagement. It provides first-class imaging and analytical facilities, including LA-ICP-MS, ICP-MS, ICP-AES, Analytical SEM, 2x Microprobe, VP SEM, 2x Field emission analytical SEM, 2x Micro-CT systems, an industry-funded ore deposits analysis laboratory, IR spectroscopy, and XRD instruments for sample characterisation.

We are looking for an experienced chemical or geochemical analyst to work across a number of applications, including ICP-OES/AES, organic elemental analysis, ICP-MS, geological sample preparation and other chemical/geochemical techniques. In addition, you will be expected to interpret results, train new users and carry out first line maintenance on equipment and ensure workplace health and safety protocols are adhered to. Whilst supporting the museum’s research and curation programmes, you may also have opportunity to engage in collaborative research.

With a strong interest in the application of advanced analytical instrumentation and analysis in answering research questions within natural sciences, you will be encouraged to contribute to the scientific development and technical applications in the Imaging & Analysis Centre and be responsible for data output and analysis. You will bring experience of analytical techniques for quantitative bulk elemental analysis and knowledge of sample preparation for bulk elemental analysis including homogenization and digestion. A BSc in Earth Sciences, Analytical Chemistry or related discipline will be essential, or several years’ experience working in an analytical chemistry or geochemistry environment.
