Job Details

Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and creative person to join the Royal Society of Chemistry's news and media team.

Ideally with a background in science journalism/science communication, you will contribute to our multimedia news content, working with media outlets, leading communications projects, conducting interviews, writing copy for press releases, articles, web publishing and sourcing stories from across our community.

Being part of the Royal Society of Chemistry is to be at the heart of a dedicated, forward-thinking and passionate collection of people. You will find opportunities to work with our colleagues across communications, publishing, membership, sales, marketing, technology and finance, community outreach, and many others, in locations including Cambridge, London, Beijing, Washington and Bangalore.

As an organisation, we want our news and media offering to raise the voice of the chemical sciences, in the UK and around the world. Everything we do supports a global scientific community and the groups we work with are exceptionally diverse – from teachers, scientists and academics, librarians and corporates to politicians and the public.

We need to attract, engage and mobilise all of our audiences, as well as managing our reputation. You will have opportunities to speak to a range of fascinating people, from students learning about chemistry for the first time through to Nobel-Laureates and other eminent scientists from our international community.

This role will be based in either our Cambridge or London offices (spending at least one day per week in our other office), which provides an opportunity for a talented individual looking to build their career in communications. You will bring creativity, ideas and enthusiasm to hugely varied projects across our communications channels and you will need to be able to demonstrate your potential to make a positive contribution to our team.

You will:

Play a key role in the news and media team, helping to shape and deliver the Royal Society of Chemistry’s news and media content.

Produce news about the Royal Society of Chemistry and our community, for publication on our website (rsc.org) and in our magazine Voice, which is distributed to over 50,000 members worldwide. Contribute to editorial planning and coordination of news. Secure national and international third-party media coverage, to help achieve the Royal Society of Chemistry’s strategic objectives through promoting key messages. Play an active role in managing the Royal Society of Chemistry’s reputation, including through monitoring coverage, spotting risks, and following crisis communications procedures. Represent the wider communications team to colleagues, providing support and advice on how to communicate effectively and the different ways in which the team can help them.

We are looking for:

Experience of collaborating with others to produce content, including supporting non-specialist colleagues and commissioning and editing work from external contributors (e.g. freelancers).

Experience of working with and incorporating rich, digital content. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, critical judgement, resilience, and composure under pressure. A desire to promote and enable the positive impact of chemistry, and science generally, on social, political, and economic issues. Experience in an editorial and/or production role in a digital-first news outlet, including sourcing and producing stories and theming and scheduling content. Knowledge and experience of UK and international print and broadcast media. Experience of interacting with senior figures in the media. Degree or equivalent experience. A background, knowledge, or qualifications in science and/or chemistry may be an advantage, but is not required. Qualifications in news, media, journalism or communications (e.g. Masters or Bachelors degree, CIPR or PRCA qualification etc.), or equivalent experience demonstrating a knowledge of news and media as a discipline. At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we will reward your contribution with excellent benefits.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply before the end of the closing date. If selected, first interviews will be held on 15 or 17 April and final interviews on 22 or 24 or 25 April 2019.
