Senior Education Policy Specialist
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has a great opportunity for a Senior Education Policy Specialist to join us on a 12-month fixed-term contract or secondment basis, to accelerate our policy research and analysis, to respond to a rapidly changing education landscape and meet the needs of our sector.
Our Education Policy team seek to influence education systems at a national level. As our Senior Education Policy Specialist, you will lead the development of the RSC’s policies, evidence base and campaigns relating to post-18 education and skills. This will cover both academic degrees and post-18 technical qualifications.
The role may be based in Cambridge or London. In either case, the role will require attending meetings in the other location on a regular basis, and there may be some travel across the UK and Ireland. This role may require occasional work on weekends and during non-core hours. Some flexibility in working hours can be accommodated, as long as requirements and a 35-hour working week can be maintained, subject to needs.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing the RSC’s policy positions and evidence-base relating to post-18 education and skills.
- Contributing to RSC campaigns and thought leadership work.
- Collaborating with colleagues across the RSC to ensure that policy initiatives and projects reflect the RSC’s strategic plans and activities.
- Influencing external policy-makers and other stakeholders in post-18 education, to ensure that the needs of chemistry are communicated and plans implemented.
- Building, maintaining links and collaborating with outside bodies, agencies, schools, universities and other organisations as appropriate, including government agencies and sister societies, in order to develop plans.
We are looking for:
- A degree in chemical science or equivalent is essential.
- Excellent knowledge of tertiary education systems (academic and technical), policy and practice in the UK is essential (and an appreciation of international variations is desirable).
- The ability to generate and critically evaluate policy ideas, data and evidence.
- The ability to communicate complex ideas to different audiences on various levels, e.g. policy makers, educators and employers.
- Proven ability to work effectively as a member of diverse cross-functional teams in a complex environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, critical judgement, resilience, and composure under pressure.
- Proven ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships and people.
- Excellent project and time management skills including the ability to plan and prioritise work, and to meet deadlines under pressure.
- Experience of policy work.
- Awareness of international tertiary education systems.
- An awareness of the skills and knowledge needed in occupations in the chemical sciences.
