Biotransformation Chemist Internship

Placement title: Chemist - Biocatalysis - Royal Society of Chemistry internship

Length of placement: 3 months, full time 

Location: Slough, SL1 4NL

Working hours: 9:00-17:30 Monday-Friday (with an hour’s lunch break)

Start date:  January/February 2019

Salary and holiday allowance: £16,000 pro rata (£4,000 for the 3 month internship)

In this lab-based role, the intern will spend time on a research project to further exemplify the use of Hypha’s new PolyCYPs® enzyme reagents to synthesise drug metabolites and diversify lead compounds. The intern will gain experience in biocatalysis together with experience in a range of analytical chemistry, purification techniques and chromatography equipment.  This internship is funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry Internship Grant Scheme.

Job description and duties

  • Identify and source suitable and cost-effective substrate compounds for exemplification
  • Conduct enzyme reactions with substrates using PolyCYPs enzymes and associated reagents
  • Extract reactions and analyse for products of interest by UPLC-MS
  • Optimise and scale-up reactions to purify and confirm the identity of the products
  • Record and present the findings of these studies at internal meetings
  • Adhere to company Health and Safety policies and lab procedures

Full training will be provided in standard operating procedures, lab safety and executing and analysing experiments with PolyCYPs enzymes.

Skills and experience

This role is suitable for university graduates who have graduated within the last three years, or an individual who is returning from a career break. Students who have not graduated will not be considered.

The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • BSc/MChem in chemistry or biochemistry
  • Interested in working in a cross-disciplinary field   
  • Enthusiastic and pro-active with an attention to detail
  • Team-orientated and personable
