We are currently looking for a Principal Scientist - Complex Medicines to join an innovative life sciences company based in the County Durham area. As the Principal Scientist - Complex Medicines you will be responsible for supporting the establishment of the Complex Medicines capability. You will act as a technical expert for the organisation, drawing upon a broad range of technical know-how to provide technical expertise and advice to a range of stakeholders, in order to inform technical strategy and direction.

This is a 2 years fixed term project in the first instance.


Your duties as the Principal Scientist - Complex Medicines will be varied however the key duties and responsibilities are as follows:

1. You will work as part of the programme team supporting the design and build of the new facility; specification and procurement of equipment and start-up the new facility.

2. You will take responsibility for building and managing a team of scientists responsible for starting up the new facility and delivering development projects.

3. You will lead the technical delivery of development projects and providing specific technical support to the Business Development Team.

4. You will engage with potential customers, building the company reputation in the development of targeted drug therapies and companion diagnostics.


To be successful in your application to this exciting opportunity as the Principal Scientist - Complex Medicines we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:

1. Relevant MSc or PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bio/Chemical Engineering and/or have equivalent experience in advanced bio-conjugation science, preferably having had experience in the development and characterization of complex drug therapies. This could include involvement with bioprocessing, biologics process or product development, protein biochemistry or protein purification.

2. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to stay at the forefront of development techniques and methods, enabling innovation within both the team and project. You will be able to plan and manage the execution of research and development projects in an effective and timely manner, including supervising, directing and mentoring the project team.

3. An ability to lead the specification, installation and commissioning of equipment

4. Laboratory management experience including writing standard operating procedures and protocols. You will also have experience of direct and indirect line management of up to 10 staff.
