Job Title: Synthetic Organic Chemist - Chemical Linker Technologies

Start Date: January 2019

Contract: 3 month fixed term with potential conversion to a permanent position

Renumeration: Dependent upon experience

Role: Water-soluble chemical linkers have a variety of uses across the physical sciences, one of which being their use in bioconjugation. This project, partially funded by the RSC Internship Programme, will seek to develop novel bifunctional chemical linker for use in peptide/protein/antibody-drug conjugation. The candidate will carry out multistep chemical synthesis and analysis, accompanied by evaluation of the linker's bioconjugation potential at one of High Force Research's state-of-the-art laboratories in the North East of England. This is a full-time fixed term internship available for three months (beginning in Jan 2019) with potential for conversion to a permanent position.

Company Profile: High Force Research ( was established in 1988 and is privately owned chemical contract research and manufacturing organisation. HFR currently employs around 35 members of staff across two sites in the northeast of England. HFR's core expertise is in chemical research and development, process optimisation, route design, scale-up and GMP manufacture of small molecules for clinical study. HFR operates predominately in the life sciences sector (pharma, biotech, imaging and diagnostics), but work also extends into other areas such as polymers, paints, semiconductors and fine chemicals. HFR actively supports and collaborates with both academic and industrial start-ups and spinouts, synthesising new materials for proof of concept studies. 

Candidate Profile: 
The ideal candidate should:

  • Possess a minimum of a 2:1 MChem/MSc (Doctoral level candidates are encouraged to apply)
  • Be interested in synthetic organic chemistry, with relevance to chemical linkers and bioconjugation
  • Have a working knowledge of common analytical techniques
  • Be motivated and results driven 
  • Be chemically inquisitive
  • Work well in a team
