The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a researcher to undertake work on the synthesis, characterisation and testing of metal-organic framework (MOF) based adsorbents for challenging gas separations. This project is funded by BP-ICAM (http://www.icam-online.org/) and involves a consortium of research groups from Imperial College, the University of Cambridge and the University of Manchester. The successful applicant will focus on the experimental development of MOF-based adsorbents for two challenging gas separations of high relevance to the energy sector.
You will synthesise and characterise these functional adsorbent devices. You will set-up testing units for adsorption tests and evaluate the performance of the materials for the targeted gas separation following the safety guidelines in place. You will analyse the results to determine the mechanisms of separations and propose ways to optimise the design and synthesis of the adsorbents. You will coordinate with the other project members at Imperial College and the other universities to ensure smooth progress of the research project. You will produce reports of the key findings for the industrial sponsor and give regular presentations for the consortium.
You should have at least a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Engineering and Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related field, preferably linked to the areas described above.
Proven experience and knowledge in porous materials (particularly metal-organic frameworks) synthesis, characterisation (e.g. spectroscopy, thermal analysis, imaging, surface area analysis, mechanical analysis) and adsorption testing is essential. As is experience in acquiring experimental data, processing/analysing them and presenting them effectively at conferences, workshops or seminars to a range of audiences. Knowledge and experience of process modelling of adsorption system is a plus.
You will be able to perform experiments in a wet chemistry lab and all accompanying analytical chemistry techniques, produce clear written reports and presentations and have the ability to collect and manipulate data.
The post is available immediately and the appointment is for 18 months. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
