Dstl is responsible for designing, developing and applying the very latest in science and technology for the benefit of UK defence and security, across government. In our work, we partner with other brilliant people – collaborating with everyone from small companies and world-class universities, to large defence organisations and other nations. Together, we develop cutting edge technologies, based on deep and widespread research.

We’re looking for graduates and post-graduate chemists to conduct cutting-edge research that impacts on our national security at home and abroad. Joining our Energetics Analysis Group (EAG), you’ll support and lead research projects in the area of explosives detection and analysis using both equipment and animals. Your findings and insights will be used to inform the highest levels of government.

We have opportunities in three teams: Signatures & Sampling; Explosives, Trials & Equipment; and Development. Whichever team you join, you’ll be using a wide range of chemistry techniques, together with broader skills such as experimental design, chemical synthesis and data analysis. Although working with specialists, you’ll also develop your own expertise with academic, industry and operational partners. Importantly, you’ll be confident in producing concise scientific reports and presenting your findings, tailoring your approach to suit different audiences.

We’re offering roles at two levels. Our Scientist role is ideal for recent graduates (2:2 or above), Masters or PhD chemists. For the Senior Scientist role, you’ll need significant experience beyond your studies, and the ability to lead small project teams and research areas. Either way, you’ll need experience of analytical techniques such as GCMS, LCMS, IC, microscopy, spectrometry and spectroscopic methods. Importantly, since you’ll be working with hazardous materials, training will be provided, in accordance with safety regulations.

If you’re passionate about helping to keep our nation safe, please visit  https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/index.cgi  and search for the vacancy reference 1590388. Follow the instructions to apply.
