Johnson Matthey PLC is a world leader in advanced materials and catalyst technology with over 13,000 employees worldwide. The Technology Centre, based at Sonning Common, undertakes research work for the group.

An opportunity has arisen for an inorganic chemist within the Recycling and Separation Technologies research group at the Technology Centre to work on processes for recycling precious metals.

The role is part of an EU Horizon 2020 project looking at new technologies that could improve the efficiency and sustainability of recycling processes. As part of lab-based trials the purpose of the role is to employ a variety of inorganic analysis techniques to understand the behaviour of the metal
complexes during processing.

The role is within an established research and development team and involves extensive collaboration with R&D teams locally and with project partners across the EU.

Key responsibilities:
 To carry out practical experiments to rigorous scientific standards under the guidance of a more experienced researcher
 To analyse and draw conclusions from experimental results and explain their relevance to the project
 To carry out analysis of metal solutions, by ICP and a range of other techniques
 To prepare technical reports and give presentations as required
 To maintain and propagate the highest EHS standards in accordance with JM requirements.

Are you the ideal candidate?
You will have:
 A Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry or related discipline with a focus on Inorganic Chemistry
 Demonstrated laboratory practical skills, including solution state analysis techniques
 The flexibility and willingness to learn
 Good oral and written communication skills
 Understanding of and adherence to Health, Safety and Environmental rules
 An enthusiasm for recycling and improving the sustainability of chemical processes.
