We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to join our technical team as an Analytical Chemistry Technician which offers the chance to learn whilst working as part of an active and enthusiastic research team. The role involves analysis of fermentation products and raw materials and general support of the research and development team.

Apprenticeship summary

  • Annual wage £12,000.00
  • Working week Monday to Friday 9am-5pm (37.5 hours/week), at our labs on Milton Park, Abingdon. Apprentices are not expected to cover weekend or night shifts.

You will mainly be working with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) systems.

During the apprenticeship you will be offered superb training and development opportunities.  As an Analytical Chemistry Technician you will learn how to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and work to required Health and Safety standards. You will also be trained in analytical methods including:

  • Preparation of analytical standards and experimental samples for HPLC and GC testing
  • Quantifying chromatograms
  • Method development

You will also work towards developing key scientific competencies such as:

  • Reporting and interpreting data
  • Simple maintenance and instrument troubleshooting
  • Laboratory document control
  • General lab housekeeping

Requirements and prospects Desired skills

The ability to follow instructions, work accurately and pay attention to detail is important as is the need to work to the required safety standards within a laboratory (full training will be given).

Personal qualities

We are looking for someone who has a genuine interest in science, is quick to learn and has a proactive attitude.   You should enjoy working in a team, be reliable and good at communicating (written and verbal).

Desired qualifications

  • 5 GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) and these should include English, Mathematics and Science
  • AS or A level or equivalent qualifications at C grade or above or anticipated grades of C or above, including Biology and Chemistry

Future prospects

For a succesful, motivated apprentice there may be the opportunity to apply for a permanent role once the apprenticeship has finished. 

Things to consider

In addition, you will attend classes one day a week (usually held locally on Milton Park but may require occasional visits off site) with a qualified external tutor and will learn with other likeminded students.  We also encourage our apprentices to make the most of additional training opportunities by attending courses provided by third party technology specialists which may require additional travel.
