Job title:                     R&D Researcher

Responsible to:         Head of R&D

Environment:             Keeling & Walker Limited, Stoke-on-Trent

Job purpose:             To work on the development of new IR (infrared) absorbing materials for thin films, conductive fillers, laser marking additives and security inks.

Main responsibilities:

  • Conducting scientific research into areas including thin films, conductive fillers, laser marking additives, security inks etc
  • Invention of new IR materials
  • Synthesising of new IR materials and upscaling the laboratory processes
  • Making demonstration units such as coatings, plastic plates or colour prints
  • Interpretation of data and the meeting of strict guidelines on documentation when recording data
  • Reporting of scientific results
  • Working collaboratively with other team members

Education & Qualifications:          

MSc or PhD in Chemistry (preferably inorganic chemistry or material science)


  • Several years’ experience of working in a laboratory environment
  • Project management skills


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated with initiative
  • Takes an innovative approach towards scientific problems and demonstrates creative thinking
  • Has a hands-on, “roll up sleeves” and get things done mentality
  • Works with and for the team
  • A systematic approach to tasks
  • Ability to work precisely under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • A willingness for continuous learning
  • Fluency in at least one foreign language useful
  • Awareness of and adherence to H&S regulations
