About the Role:

The role of the Discovery Programme Lead is to monitor and direct initiation, execution, management and review of a portfolio of Discovery Programmes that aim to progress early R&D strategy.


Create and maintain a portfolio of Opportunity Development Plans, including a detailed knowledge and understanding of the cognate sections of such plans as they relate to company assets and early product development.
Initiate, manage and deliver a coherent and focussed set of Discovery Programmes comprised of discrete research projects.
Actively participate in the formal review of research project study reports arising from their Discovery Programme research activities.
Maintain excellent working relationships across corporate functions, with particular emphasis on fostering string and productive relationships with the Preclinical function.
Work closely with stakeholders in Legal, Materials and Commercial in order to ensure delivery of Discovery Programmes through feasibility of IPR, cannabinoid and commercial constraints.
Manage Discovery Programme budgets, timelines and reporting of individual programme portfolio.
Maintain relationships with relevant experts in academia, industry, and government to further Discovery Programmes.
Undertake review of scientific literature, company data, anecdotal evidence, and related information to identify gaps in knowledge and additional basic science research requirements to support specific Discovery Programmes.
Manage costs, schedules and quality within each Discovery Programme for which the Discovery Programme Lead is responsible, and liaise with the Associate Director, Preclinical.
Co-ordinate and participate in scientific thinking in areas associated with each Discovery Programme; organise and coordinate internal and external meetings (e.g. Advisory boards) with appropriate functions and programme stakeholders.
Support the Director of Discovery Research in developing, implementing and managing programme infrastructure, quality practices and procedures in line with relevant best practices and in compliance with regulatory and business requirements.
Initiate contact and liaise with Medical Affairs to identify and plan publication of Discovery Programme research findings.
Initiate contact and liaises with Legal Affairs to ensure timely protection of company assets arising from Discovery Programme research findings.


A higher degree (PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline.
Strong experience in a project management role in preclinical research or drug development.
Excellent management skills, including planning and resource allocation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with external partners and customers.
Good understanding of experimental preclinical pharmacology, toxicology, and drug ADME.
Good understanding of the principles of intellectual property associated with drug development.
Good understanding of budgeting processes, financial controls and budget management.
Good understanding of the publication process for the production of scientific articles, presentations and related materials.
IT Literate
High level of numeracy, including statistics and related forms of data analysis.
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to interact and influence effectively across disciplines and functions.
Ability to deliver results within challenging and changing timelines.
Familiarity with disease areas of interest
Good understanding of cannabinoid pharmacology desirableDiscovery
