The Role:

We’re seeking an analytical and pragmatic Senior Scientist to join the R&D division of our Pharmaceutical Development team. In this exciting role, you’ll take the lead in managing and developing our new Transmission Raman and NIR assessment methods to quantify and qualify the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients within our products and processes, in order to support the safe release of our medicines to the market. Using a range of analytical software
(e.g. Content QC, Matlab, PLS Toolbox and JMP), you’ll design experiments, process the output data and develop mathematical models to perform rapid quantitative analyses of our products, along with identifying products from our portfolio suitable for Raman or NIR release. Following this identification, you’ll establish and document consistent work flows, including adapting scripts or macros to aid automation. You’ll also review the Technical sections of the products’ regulatory dossiers and liaise with the MHRA and our equipment manufacturers to support the addition of the new release method to relevant product licences. In addition, you’ll work in collaboration with our broader Science teams to assist with investigations and development projects to solve technical problems, provide statistical support (e.g. experiment design, multivariate analysis and capability assessments), and help drive our Continuous Improvement initiatives forwards.

The Person:

Highly numerate with a good knowledge of chemometric methods, you have extensive experience of statistical modelling (including PLS or PCA multivariate analysis) and using statistical software
(e.g. Matlab, JMP, PLS Toolbox), along with an excellent knowledge of key analytical techniques
(e.g. Raman or NIR spectroscopy, HPLC and UV). You’ll hold a PhD or focussed Masters-level qualification in a relevant mathematical or science-based subject, and have a sound understanding of ICH method development requirements and pharmaceutical and analytical development. With strong communication and interpersonal skills (written and spoken), you’re able to relate to people of all levels and backgrounds and translate complex technical information for a variety of audiences. You’re well organised with good project management skills and the ability to prioritise your own workload, even in a fast-moving or changeable work environment. Coming from a strong academic background, you’ll ideally have some private sector experience, with a clear understanding of GMP site requirements, fitting ideas or workflows to regulatory frameworks and the process of developing formulations on pilot equipment through to production scale-ups. A working knowledge of JSL (including JMP scripting language, HTML and Javascript) would be beneficial.
