A fantastic opportunity for an accomplished Laboratory Manager with experience working in a Biosafety / Containment Level 2 Laboratory has become available to join an emerging Biotechnology company in the Cambridgeshire area. As the experienced Laboratory Manager you will be responsible for the smooth running of Microbiology laboratory operations and will co-ordinate the Research and Development teams to ensure optimal functionality. You will act as the sole point of contact for all operational matters both within the company and with external suppliers and contractors.


Your duties as the Laboratory Manager will be varied however the key duties and responsibilities are as follows:

1. Ensure that the laboratory is fully functional and that individuals are able to undertake their research activities as effectively and efficiently as possible. E.g. ensure work stations are well equipped to meet the needs of the research program.

2. Be accountable for ensuring that the laboratory operates in compliance with laboratory health and safety rules at all times. This will include:

- Oversee, update and maintain documentation; ensuring they maintain compliant with appropriate legislation. These could include SOPs, Risk Assessments, Handbooks.
- Ensure all research is compliant and coordinate training and induction of staff.
- Be first point of contact for all accidents and emergencies, both in and out of working hours. This includes anything from spillages to personal and equipment damage.
- Be the Laboratory's Fire Warden and First Aider.

3. Oversee the safety operations of all Laboratory equipment, becoming knowledgeable in the operations of all equipment, providing advise and training, organising servicing, maintenance, repair and disposal.

4. Manage the ordering and delivery of services and supplies. This includes overseeing purchase of equipment and consumables, agreeing budgets, negotiating prices, liaising with suppliers as well as the storing, organisation and distribution of supplies through out the Laboratory.
5. Oversee the needs of visitors to the laboratory, ensuring compliance at all times with company processes and appropriate legislation. Ensure visitors are supervised at all times and follow the correct entry/exit procedures.

6. Support the researchers as necessary on an ad hoc basis, assisting where possible in situations where another pair of hands is useful.


To be successful in your application to this exciting opportunity as the Lab Manager we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:

1. Relevant degree in a Life Sciences discipline in addition to NEBOSH (or similar Health and Safety qualification) and Fire and First aid training.

2. Proven industry experience Managing a CL2-level / BSL-2 Laboratory. Experience working within biological safety containment is essential due to the nature of the work undertaken within the company.

3. A working knowledge and practical experience with Microbiology techniques is beneficial. This could be within one or more of the following areas: R&D, Bioprosessing and Fermentation.
