Promethean Particles is a Nottingham based company which designs, develops and manufactures inorganic nanoparticle dispersions using continuous hydrothermal synthesis.  We manufacture a range of nanomaterials in dispersion (water or solvent); this method is advantageous for formulation into final applications. Development work is carried out at gram scale and we currently have manufacturing capacity up to 1000 tons per year. Promethean works with a range of industrial customers around the world and we are looking to expand our team to deliver on commercial and grant-funded projects having recently moved to new, larger premises.

We are currently looking for an experienced formulation scientist to join our dynamic, friendly team.  This role is predominantly a practical, laboratory position which would suit an appropriately qualified formulation scientist or ink technician with experience of formulation or colloid science (preferably in an industrial setting).  Day to day activities involve synthesising new nanomaterials and controlling the stability and formulation of these in dispersion to optimise the material properties for commercial applications.  This varied role would cover research work and commercial development work in conjunction with a broad range of international clients.  There is potential for international travel (scientific meetings, trade shows and customer site visits).  There is scope for the role to develop into a more senior position with significant levels of responsibility for specific projects.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Chemical synthesis and formulation of inorganic nanomaterial dispersions using high pressure equipment (bench scale and pilot scale)
  • Processing and formulating dispersions for ink applications
  • Performing characterisation and interpretation of characterisation data
  • Technical communication with customers including report and proposal writing
  • Good laboratory practice and accurate experiment recording
  • Experimental design
  • General laboratory tasks including writing MSDS, writing COSHH assessments and maintenance of laboratory equipment

We are looking for the following qualifications and skills

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience of ink formulation or particle/dispersion stabilisation in an industrial setting or for a commercial application
  • Knowledge of formulation and stabilisation of particle dispersions extremely desirable but not essential
  • First degree in chemistry, materials science or a related subject; PhD or higher degree in relevant area would be desirable but not essential
  • Practical laboratory experience, with ability to design experiments, preferably in an industrial environment
  • Knowledge or experience of standard characterisation techniques (XRD, TEM, SEM, DLS, zeta potential measurements)
  • Interpersonal skills: ability to discuss technical issues in a professional manner in a commercial setting (both internally and externally)
  • Presentation skills: ability to report findings to other staff and present at both internal and external events
  • Transferable skills; good project management abilities, time keeping and working to deadlines (particularly managing a number of projects in parallel)
  • IT skills: high level of competence in Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Applicants must be UK/EU citizens or have a valid UK work permit.
