An excellent opportunity for Graduate Research Scientist is now available at ANB Sensors Ltd, for a talented Chemistry/Chemical Engineering graduate. The successful intern will be using electrochemical techniques and electrode manufacturing equipment, to develop ANBSensors novel pH sensing technology. The work will take place in a communal laboratory, allowing the intern to work in a dynamic environment.

About ANB Sensors Ltd 

ANB Sensors Ltd is an SME developing novel pH sensors for oceanographic and water monitoring purposes. From our discussions with water sensor manufacturers and oceanographers alike, it is evident there is an unmet need to develop a smart, autonomous, calibration free pH sensor. Earlier versions of the pH sensor have been deployed in oceans up to 3000 meter depths and in coastal waters off of California. From these results, ANB now has a set of priority recommendations for its next version sensor.

Job role 

Aim: Develop, optimize and deliver ANBSensors’ chemical based sensing transducer to end users for validation in their laboratories. ANB has a list of industry requirements that its front end transducer chemistry has to meet; optimization of the sensor chemistry for lifetime and environmental conditions is key to the success of the entire project. This development work is the focus of this internship.  The internship will involve using electrochemical techniques and electrode manufacturing equipment to produce a number of test electrodes. Their performance will be characterised using a range of techniques and in a number of industrially relevant matrices. Through this work the intern will help establish quality checks for future manufacturing protocols. During the internship we expect to have meetings with potential end users and sensor manufacturers, and it is proposed that the intern will attend and present at these meetings.

Job accountabilities 

The internship will involve engagement with the ANBSensors’ team and with its stakeholders, both at a technical and a business level. Technically, the intern will gain a working knowledge of electrochemistry, electro analysis, sensor manufacturing and environmental testing. Through the project, the student will become familiar with and given tuition on Technology Readiness Level Indicators. 

The work will take place in a communal laboratory, allowing the intern to work in a dynamic environment with both older and younger peers, and actively engage in the upkeep of the laboratory; ensuring best practices (HSE policies, COSH, SOP) are always followed. The intern will be expected to present results to stakeholders, enhancing their business and presentation skills, will be embedded into the culture of a start-up company and be provided with knowledge about the company, our goals and how we are setting out to achieve them. Furthermore, they will be exposed to Intellectual Property procedures through engagement with ANB Sensors CEO, an Intellectual Property Attorney. 

Skills 

Technical Skills:  
Essential: 

  • Chemistry/Chemical Engineering degree 1st, 2:1 (if not graduated, proof of grade or predicted grade and an academic reference)
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices
  • Working knowledge of Electrochemical Systems

Desirable:  

  • Working in industrial/environment project
  • Enjoys working on targeted and focused projects with clear goals.
  • Experience in experimental design and device construction/design

Computer:  
Essential:  

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Desirable:  

  • Working knowledge of Matlab
  • Development of GUI

Soft Skills: 
Essential:   

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills documentation of work and practices
  • Ability to work in a communal environment and as part of the team both at UoH and with ANB staff and consultants
