  • Are you looking for a role in which you will contribute to a safer future by making a key contribution to an environmental project of national significance?
  • Would you enjoy working in a small team where you will have your own responsibilities but also the close support of like-minded professionals?
  • Would you be inspired by our values: professional; responsible; accessible and learning?
  • Are you able to explain your work clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences?
  • Would you be excited by opportunities to collaborate both nationally and internationally and become a world-recognised expert in your field?

If your answer is ‘yes!’ to each of the above questions, you have a good degree and PhD in radiochemistry, geochemistry, materials science or a closely related discipline, we would like you to consider joining us.

We are RWM; our mission is to deliver a geological disposal facility and provide radioactive waste management solutions for the UK. The facility will be a multi-billion pound, highly engineered facility capable of safely isolating the nation’s higher activity waste deep underground. We are looking to add to our team of talented scientists who manage the research that provides the scientific basis for that programme of work.

For an understanding of the activities we are involved with and that make this an exciting place to work visit http://www.nda.gov.uk/rwm

About the role

Joining our Research Team at a key stage in the development of our organisation you will work collaboratively with colleagues across the business and be responsible for developing, maintaining and communicating RWM’s scientific knowledge in the field of radiochemistry, geochemistry or materials science. You will lead on the definition, procurement and interpretation of the results of research, development and demonstration studies on behalf of RWM and will conduct assessments of the disposability of proposed UK waste packages.  You will work closely with leading experts in industry and academia, both in the UK and internationally and will represent RWM at scientific meetings and events, so some overseas travel will be necessary.

About you

Qualified to PhD level, you will have expert understanding of radiochemistry, geochemistry or materials science and will have experience of carrying out and ideally managing research projects either in industry or academia. You’ll be an excellent communicator, be working towards chartered member status in your professional institute and be willing to expand your expertise into related areas as needed. We will provide support to enable you to become a nationally and internationally recognised expert in this specialised and important field.
